African Games: Ghana’s Black Princesses defeat Nigeria 2-1 to win gold
The Black Princesses of Ghana clinched the title of champions in the women’s football tournament at the 13th African Games…
Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon may be looking at some time off the field, having departed St James’ Park on crutches following the 4-4 draw with Luton.
At Saturday’s halftime, Callum Wilson took the 22-year-old’s place.
“I think he twisted his ankle,” said Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, who did not provide a time frame for how long Gordon could be out for.
“He is in a protective boot and the physios are doing the right thing.”
This season, Newcastle has struggled with injuries to important players.
Goalkeeper Nick Pope is now sidelined due to a dislocated shoulder, and midfielder Joelinton is expected to miss the remainder of the campaign due to a thigh injury.
Other players with injuries include Matt Targett, Elliot Anderson, Joe Willock, and Jamaal Lascelles.
Harvey Barnes, a winger, returned on Saturday, which gave Newcastle hope.
After missing the previous four months due to a foot injury, he returned in the 63rd minute and netted Newcastle’s fourth goal to tie the game 4–4.
“I have been out for a long time and it has been a tough period for me,” Barnes said.
“I just wanted to come on and make an impact and I did but it wasn’t enough to win the game. But it is great being back out there.
“There will be a little bit of rust for a little bit but that goal will give me the world of confidence going forward and hopefully I can build on that and the team can build on that.
“There are still a lot of positives to take.”
